Why Nutrition Is Crucial for Wrestlers

(According to an Olympic Gold Medalist)

“If you’re a successful wrestler progressing through a competition, you’ll have to wrestle four to six matches depending on whether you’re a collegiate or post-college, international athlete,” says Kevin Jackson, an Olympic gold medalist and coach for the University of Michigan wrestling program.

As a result, both muscular and cardiovascular endurance are key to achieving victory. “And it’s easy to see the effects of poor nutrition and inadequate fueling from match to match,” says Jackson.

It starts with greater fatigue, proceeding quickly to a precipitous decline in speed and agility, as well as a tendency to wrestle conservatively instead of explosively, powerfully, and confidently, Jackson says.

The best athletes in wrestling—and I’m talking all levels, including international—are the ones who have the best nutrition plans.

“But if you do nutrition well and fuel properly—and that is an essential part of our strategy at the University of Michigan—you can actually get stronger as you progress through a tournament,” he says.

Bottom line: If you want to wear a medal around your neck, how you feed your body is as important as how you train it. “The best athletes in wrestling—and I’m talking all levels, including international—are the ones who have the best nutrition plans,” says Jackson.
