Why Nutrition Is Crucial
for Ultrarunners

(According to One of the World’s Top Ultra Coaches)

Absolutely nothing lowers an ultrarunner’s potential like improper fueling. “Ultras are ultimately a nutrition contest,” says David Roche, head coach at SWAP Running in Boulder, Colorado. He knows about the importance of ultra-running nutrition all too well. Many of his pro athletes, including Western States 100 and Leadville 100 winner Clare Gallagher, train for races up to 200 miles and beyond.

“Recent studies show massive differences in performance and muscle breakdown based on pre-race and during-race consumption of fuel, with higher intakes leading to greater success. Sometimes, it can be more predictive than actual training status among similar athletes in studies.”

In fact, Roche says that athletes who under-fuel often think they have an endurance problem when usually they’re suffering from “low energy availability.”  “Low energy availability destroys performance,” says Roche. “My first rule for athletes is simple: Eat enough, always. Eat too much, sometimes. Eat too little, never.”
