Why Nutrition Is Crucial for Rugby
(According to a Head of Performance for USA Rugby)
âRugby has a unique blend of skills thatâs different from all other sports,â says Alex Ross, CSCS, USA Rugbyâs Director of Performanceâ15s & Pathways. âA good way to think about it is that it combines the running of soccer with the contact of football.â
Competition often involves two to three matches a day with just a couple of hours between events. Training is equally demanding, typically consisting of six field sessions and four gym sessions a week. In short, two-a-days are the norm for rugby players year-roundâwhether theyâre in season or not.Â
âAs you can imagine, fueling these athletes is hugely important,â says Ross. âItâs critical that theyâre strong enough to withstand repeated hits and tackles, fast enough to outrun opposing players, and fit enough to keep it up for more than an hour multiple times a day.â
If you arenât fueling properly and you arenât drinking enough fluids, youâre done.

As if that werenât enough, thereâs the added issue of hydration: âRugby is an international game that is often played in hot climates,â says Ross. âIf you arenât fueling properly and you arenât drinking enough fluids, youâre done.â
Donât let that happen to you…Â
