Why Nutrition Is Crucial for Golf

(According to One of the World’s Top Golf-Fitness Coaches)

One of the greatest differences between golf and other sports is the length of play. While it’s not a fast-moving sport, golfers spend 5 to 6 hours on the course and swing the club 60-75 times—at speeds of 100 miles per hour.

“If you haven’t fueled and hydrated properly, you’ll start making poor decisions, you won’t hit as far, you’ll be fatigued, and you’ll lack finishing power,” says Kevin Duffy, CSCS, founder of Rotational Strength and Power in Acton, Massachusetts, and one of Golf Digest’s 50 Top Golf-Fitness Trainers in America.

When all is said and done, the people collecting the year-end trophy are the fittest ones in the sport, and those athletes know how critically important nutrition is.

Whether or not a player has nailed their nutrition becomes increasingly evident towards the end of a round. “If you shoot a 36 on the front and a 44 on the back, there’s a reason that things went haywire, and it’s not the weather,” says Duffy.

That’s why Duffy advises clients to prioritize nutrition.

“Food is fuel, and the more energy you have to work on your game and finish a round, the more of a leg up you’ll have,” he says.  “When all is said and done, the people collecting the year-end trophy are the fittest ones in the sport, and those athletes know how critically important nutrition is.”
