Why Nutrition Is Crucial for Basketball
(According to the Head of Performance for an NCAA Champion)
Basketball relies on a combination of athletic skills including multi-directional speed and agility, hand-eye coordination, explosive power, dynamic strength, balance, endurance, and focus.
“There really aren’t any positional differences when it comes to skills and conditioning,” says Ramsey Nijem, ScD, Men’s Basketball Director of Sports Performance at the University of Kansas, the 2022 NCAA Division I champion. “Every single player needs to be able to run, cut, jump, and slide at high velocities and intensities, even when fatigued.”
That makes proper nutrition critical. “If nutrition isn’t optimized, it has a ripple effect on everything else,” says Nijem. “Your perceived exertion is higher, your endurance is lower, and it will be hard for you to gain or repair muscle tissue, which will affect your progress and performance.”

It’s obvious during a game who has their nutrition and hydration dialed in and who doesn’t, says Nijem. “You see it around the 90-minute mark,” he explains. “You become overly fatigued, your reaction time slows down, and you don’t process plays fast enough or make shots that you should be nailing.”
Don’t let that happen to you…
