With races that can last just 40 seconds, some people might assume that nutrition isn’t important for speed skating. Eight-time Olympic medalist Apolo Ohno, however, would strongly disagree. “Nutrition is such a game changer that I can’t imagine any athlete in any sport overlooking this critical component,” he says.
“Think of speed skating like playing chess—while generating immense power through your hips and quads,” says Ohno. Training involves hour after hour of aerobic intervals, both on and off the ice. On top of that, athletes complete focused intense strength work to build the unique muscular strength they need to withstand the gravitational forces they feel during a race.

Being able to recover quickly and keep up with the intense demands of training is essential, says Ohno. That’s where nutrition comes in.
“From 2006 to 2010 is where I made the most drastic changes and improvements to my diet,” he says. By the end of the 2010 Olympic games held in Vancouver, he’d added a sixth, then a seventh, and then an eighth career medal.
