“Nutrition is fundamental to climbers to maintain and optimize performance,” says professional rock climber and three-time US National Champion Sasha DiGuilian. She should know: DiGuilian has climbed over 30 First Female Ascents around the world and is the first North American woman to climb grade 9a (5.14d).
To prepare for these kinds of feats, she spends 35 to 40 hours per week climbing and training.
Because it’s a weight-to-strength ratio sport, climbers tend to have low levels of body fat. That means a focus on nutrition is critical but can also create challenges.
“There is a prevalent history of disordered eating within the upper echelon of climbing athletes,” says DiGuilian. “As a professional climber since I was 12, I have gone through peaks and valleys within my own career. Depriving my body of the proper nutrients it needs has led, in my past, to a drop in strength and an increase in injuries.”
It’s not just physical ability that can suffer from improper fueling. “Mental clarity and focus are extremely important,” says DiGuilian. And when nutrition falls short, so does cognitive performance.
