Why Nutrition Is Crucial
for Mountain Bikers

(According to the Mountain Bike Director of USA Cycling)

For peak performance, it’s no surprise that mountain biking (MTB) requires quality fuel to meet the sport’s physical demands. But there’s another reason why proper nutrition is imperative: MTB can be extremely mentally taxing, too. That’s because you have to be able to skillfully control your bike while cornering, jumping, and climbing aggressive off-road terrain.

“Mountain bike racing is a volatile sport where the conditions, competition, and situations change so often and randomly,” says USA Cycling Mountain Bike Director and former pro cyclist Jesse Anthony

Inadequate nutrition and hydration can create major problems as they can lead to cognitive fatigue, which deteriorates skills and reaction time.

In fact, even minor dehydration can lead to a decline in performance. “When athletes start to become dehydrated, they definitely lose performance. Their power output can be reduced, and their focus and sharpness also decrease,” says Anthony. “This can lead to making mistakes on technical features and costing them time, or even crashing. The loss in power obviously slows them down, sometimes significantly.”

Don’t let that happen to you…
