Whether racing for a personal best or attempting the distance for the first time, it’s nearly impossible to complete 26.2 miles without the right fuel. When you account for all the miles you run during the months of training before the marathon itself, proper nutrition becomes even more critical.

“When I moved off the track, from racing 5,000 m and 10,000 m distances to the marathon, my training required doubling the amount of miles I was accustomed to,” says Shalane Flanagan, a four-time Olympian and the first American woman to win the New York City Marathon in 40 years. “This was the first time I actually realized that my diet and the food I was putting in my body were crucial to getting through this additional training.” 

For Flanagan, that meant not only increasing total calories to account for all the extra miles but also increasing her sources of carbohydrates and especially healthy fats. “I truly believe that changing my diet has enabled me to extend my career,” she says.
