Why Nutrition Is Crucial for Ice Hockey

Hockey athletes need a mix of strength, speed, agility, and conditioning. But the intensity is what sets hockey apart from other sports.
Players are only on the ice for about 17 minutes per game, but each minute includes an average of seven 15-meter sprints, according to a 2018 study. Players rarely reach top speed, says strength and nutrition coach Dan Garner, who’s trained pro athletes in 13 sports, including a long list of NHL players. That means games are won or lost in acceleration—the all-out attempts to get from point A to point B faster than another player.
At the highest levels, both players may be equally fast, equally strong, equally skilled, and equally motivated. Which one comes out ahead may depend on their nutrition status.
That’s why in-game nutrition and hydration are imperative, especially late in games. But what you eat and drink both before and in between games matters, too.
“Pregame nutrition begins when the last game ends,” explains Garner. “Everything you do from the moment one game ends to the beginning of the next game affects how well you recover. And you’ll only perform as well as you’ve recovered.”
