Why Nutrition Is Crucial for Cyclists

(According to a Top Cycling Coach and Former Professional Cyclist)

Both the cardiovascular and muscular systems need to be trained to be successful in road cycling, says pioneering cycling coach and former professional cyclist Hunter Allen.

To achieve this, an elite-level cyclist trains between 20 to 30 hours a week on the bike. Many of their rides are longer than five hours each, and may include as many as 18 to 25 high-intensity intervals, says Allen.

To maintain their high output, proper nutrition and hydration are essential. “Taking in good foods is critical to maintaining your blood glucose levels,” says Allen. “When an athlete does not fuel properly and their blood glucose drops, they experience a ‘bonk’ and this is immediately detrimental to their performance. They ride slower, have a hard time focusing, and will be dropped from the group.”

Hydration is just as important. “Lack of hydration is the number one reason for all performance degradation,” says Allen. “Whether it’s football, soccer, or cycling, almost always you can point to the rider that is more dehydrated as the one that is in second place.”
