Why Nutrition Is Crucial for
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

(According to a 9-Time World Champion)

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that revolves around the concept that a smaller, weaker person can use leverage to successfully defend themself against a bigger, stronger opponent. Athletes must have aerobic power, strength, endurance, and mental focus and toughness.

Similar to wrestling, boxing, and judo, it’s a weight-class sport, with nine weight classes for men and eight for women. As a result, nutrition plays a critical role in managing body composition as well as energy and strength levels.

Top athletes must prioritize their recovery to be ready to train hard day after day, says Leticia Ribeiro, a 4th-degree black belt and 9-time world champion. They focus on everything from physical therapy and massage to getting enough sleep. Eating right, however, might be the most pivotal.

Poor nutrition can lead to fatigue, dehydration, and poor health, all of which negatively affect athletic performance.

—Leticia Ribeiro, 4th-degree black belt and 9-time world champion

“Poor nutrition can lead to fatigue, dehydration, and poor health, all of which negatively affect athletic performance,” says Ribeiro, considered one of the top 10 best Brazilian jiu-jitsu female fighters of all time.

“In my career, my performance at competitions and at training changed completely after I started a focused dieting program. I dropped one weight class. I felt stronger, faster, and I was able to conquer many more titles with that change.”
