Why Nutrition Is Crucial for Baseball
(According to the New York Yankees
Director of Player Health & Performance)
“The average player today is way bigger and stronger” than in previous generations, says Eric Cressey, director of player health and performance for the New York Yankees. “The game is more specialized, and they’re hitting and throwing the ball harder than ever.”
This hasn’t happened by accident. Besides smarter training methods, better nutrition and recovery practices have played a critical role, too.
And when nutrition isn’t on point? It shows up on the field. “Top tier for me is hydration status,” Cressey says. “You’d be shocked at how many players are chronically dehydrated.” Dehydration can negatively affect reaction time, energy levels, power output, and mental focus.
What’s more, certain diets can also interfere with performance. Cressey offers the example of a minor league player who was determined to use the keto diet during the offseason.
When the player got to spring training, he’d lost fat, but he’d also lost several miles per hour off his fastball. “Velocity is velocity,” Cressey says. “It’s a very objective measure of whether something worked.” In the case of the keto diet, it was clearly incompatible with the young pitcher’s development.
