If you’re a high performance, competitive athlete, you’ll recognize the year as having three distinct phases – camp, competition season, and the off-season. And you also know that every phase of the year has its own unique training and nutritional challenges.

When it comes to nutrition, you know that:

1. During camp, calorie needs are ridiculously high. Yet camp is also the time where body weight and body fat percent need to be shaped for the upcoming season. So there’s that delicate balance between eating for recovery and fuel while also eating for low body fat.

After all, you’ve got to recover. But you can’t get “fat.” And this balancing act isn’t always easy to manage. Certainly, just eating when you’re hungry isn’t going to cut it. So you know you’re gonna need some nutrition strategies for managing camp.

2. During the competition season, rigorous travel schedules and unpredictable meal offerings offer up a new set of challenges. You don’t want to waste all that hard work you put in during training camp with poor dietary habits on the road. But it’s often quite difficult to figure out how to balance your eating when the choices offered to you might be downright scary.

And, as a result, most athletes battle with one of two fates – the fate of mysterious weight gain during the season, or the fate of mysterious weight loss during the season. You probably know what I’m talking about here. Muscle is lost, fat is gained, and you end up a softer version of your former self. Because of this, you know that you’re gonna need some nutrition strategies for the road.

3. During the off-season, fat weight is often gained. Now, this isn’t a surprise as the off-season means a lower training volume. Combine this lower volume with an unaltered nutrition intake and you’ve got unwanted fat gain.

This ends up becoming a problem for many athletes as their return to camp means having to lose weight. And the worst time to try to “diet off” excess fat is when you’ve got a high training volume. It’s really easy to crash under these conditions so you know that you’re gonna need some nutrition strategies to manage your weight in the off-season.

In the end, these three sets of challenges above form the basis of what I call “high level nutritional planning.” And high level nutritional planning is what I use with all of my athletes and teams.

However, before any of this high level planning is discussed, I always begin by teaching my athletes what an “athlete diet” looks like.

You see, most athletes really have no idea what they should and shouldn’t be eating. Sure, most of the athletes I work with know to avoid junk food. They also know that hydration is important, so many of them drink either water or Gatorade during training. Some even eat a few extra fruits and veggies a day.

However, most athletes think this is sports nutrition. They think these elementary nutrition steps are enough to fuel elite training and performance in the modern age of high technology training, testing, and supplementation – not to mention the modern age of designer drugs.

Yet, I’ve got to be honest here. In reality, these “good nutrition” ideas are a step behind basic – they’re primitive.

After all, little kids know which junk foods are bad for them. And little kids all drink Gatorade during soccer practice or whatever other sport they’re playing.

So, in the end, if your idea of sports nutrition is based around what 3rd graders already know, I hate to say it, but you’re way behind. You’re not eating like a high performance athlete at all.

And, chances are, your performance is suffering because of it.

The Time Interview

Back in 2004, I was interviewed by Time Canada for a special pre-Olympic nutrition story. And the interviewer’s thesis was – let’s just say – backwards. Basically, the article’s theme was that high performance nutrition in summer sport was benefiting from a “back to the basics” movement; a movement back to how athletes ate a decade prior.

I disagreed.

After painstakingly detailing some of the cool advances in nutritional science that I was using successfully with some of my sport teams, the interviewer insisted that “No, it seems like many nutritionists are promoting a ‘back to the basics’ philosophy.”

I asked her to clarify.

Back to the basics, to her, meant things like “drinking more fruit juice,” “having more daily servings of dairy for calcium,” “avoiding dietary supplements,” “eating more pasta,” etc.

My response: “The only nutritionists promoting these sorts of ‘back to the basics’ strategies are the ones that don’t know anything more than the basics.”

I continued: “And the truth is that these individuals aren’t fit to advise athletes competing at a level where results are paramount and technology and information lines the path to these results.”

I didn’t even make a dent. Her mind was made up.

So, as you can imagine, the interviewer doggedly stuck to her thesis, went ahead and found a few registered dietitians to support the “back to the basics” thesis, largely ignored my advice and commentary, and ran the article to support this ridiculous idea.

It’s a shame. With all the great, high performance nutrition information available to athletes today, why is the media wasting their time with dated nonsense written up by journalists and inexperienced dietitians?

Your guess is as good as mine.

Advanced Athlete Nutrition

So, at this point you’re probably wondering what type of things my athletes are doing that the “back to the basics folks” aren’t. Well, there are alot of them – too many to list in this short article.

However, let me list just a few of the principles that you can apply immediately to make a huge difference in your body composition and your performance.

*Nutrient Timing – this is the science of how proteins, carbohydrates, and fats are processed differently in the morning vs. the evening; before the workout vs. after the workout. If you’re not using the princiles of Nutrition Timing, your recovery and training adaptation may be suffering.

*Calorie Partitioning – this is the science of how the calories you eat are distributed on your body. You see, whenever you eat food, those calories can either be burned for fuel, stored as fat, or directed toward muscle recovery. And knowing how to better control this process with your food and supplement intake can go a long way toward improving both your body comp and your performance.

*Peri-Workout Nutrition – this is the science of using the right combinations of nutrients before, during, and after each training session to improve during-workout performance as well as post-workout recovery.

*Inflammation Management – high performance training means inevitable muscle aches, pains, and strains. And associated with all of these is inflammation. By managing inflammation, you can keep pain at bay while speeding up your healing and return to function.

*Metabolic Stimulation – due to the high training demands of athletes, coupled with the controlled calorie intakes they often follow, the metabolism can slow down, making it hard to drop body fat. By stimulating the metabolism with targeted food and supplement intake, the metabolism can continue to race along, making body weight management problems a thing of the past.

Again, these are just five of the many strategies I teach my athletes when they begin working with myself and my Precision Nutrition team.

“Is Precision Nutrition for me?”

The easiest way to describe who Precision Nutrition is for is to tell you who it ISN’T for.

Precision Nutrition is not for people who already have the bodies they want. “But I think my nutrition is already pretty good – do I still need this?”

Well, first of all, how do you know your nutrition plan is good?

Because you “try to eat healthy?” Because you think your diet is low-carb, or high-carb, or low-fat or high-fat, or low-protein or high-protein or high in fiber? Because it looks good on paper? Or because it meets some other criteria for “pretty good nutrition” that I don’t know about?

Let me lay this out in the clearest, most concise way I know how . . .

If you don’t already have the body you want, then your nutrition plan is not good enough.

Listen, the only one way to determine whether your nutrition plan is any good is look at your results. That’s the plain truth. I don’t care if your plan meets so-and-so’s guidelines, or is “low-carb” or contains enough vitamin C or whatever the latest B.S. indicator of good nutrition is in the popular press.

There is only one rule: what works is good; what doesn’t is not. That’s the only rule I live by.

Precision Nutrition is entirely outcome-based – it’s about getting results and nothing else. So if you want to know whether Precision Nutrition is right for you, then just ask yourself this question:

“Do I have the body I really, truly want?”

Answer it honestly – don’t worry, no one is listening.

If the answer is yes, then great.

But if you answered no – “in all honesty, I don’t yet have the body I really want” – then I can say without the slightest hesitation that Precision Nutrition is exactly what you need. Optimizing your nutrition plan is the true secret to transforming your body – and Precision Nutrition shows you exactly how to do it.
