Green Tea Supplements - Any thoughts on risks?

EDIT: Mods, I just noticed this thread over in the Precision Nutrition program topics... http://www.precisionnutrition.com/me...ead.php?t=6764

Feel free to close this thread if you wish to combine them.

Original Question:

I am getting ready to start GSD, which includes supplements that include EGCG.

Yesterday, I ran across this article...

"Green tea can be harmful in large quantities"

http://www.newscientist.com/article/...uantities.html

I followed the links through to the original report below, but haven't fully digested it yet. One key sentence I did find states, "Although there have been no reports of toxicity in human volunteers enrolled in intervention studies, careful monitoring of liver and kidney function is required until the risk of toxic events associated with tea catechins is established in humans."

http://pubs.acs.org/cgi-bin/sample.c...tx7000515.html

Has anyone within the PN community seen any other info on this topic?

Thanks

I attached a review.

This reminds me of the first rule I learned in Pharmacology - Everything is potentially toxic. Water, aspirin, tea, etc.

With the countless benefits of regular green tea consumption, I think incorporating it in a regular nutrition plan is a good idea. Supplementation is a different story. High doses of green tea extracts may lead to a concentrated amount in the human body.

Make sure and find a reliable supplement/supplement company and check your dosing.

Thanks, Ryan.

I really appreciate the time you took to do this research. I'll review and modify my Get Shredded Diet accordingly, just in case.

One of the most common questions we get from Precision Nutrition readers is whether we can help them personally. The answer is usually no, and has been for some time. And the reason is simply that there are more people that need help than there are qualified coaches to help them.

But every now and again, we open up a few spots in our coaching programs, and today is one of those days. We're now accepting clients for our group coaching programs: Lean Eating for Men, and Lean Eating for Women.
