Valerie Waugaman

I recently re-read JB's article, "The Valerie Waugaman Project". I read it for the first time over a year ago, and periodically come back to it as it is a tremendous source of inspiration and motivation. Now that I know more about nutrition and training, I have a question regarding her program and would appreciate an explanation.

I have heard over an over again how incredibly difficult it is for women to gain lean body mass in general. Combine that with a low calorie diet, and it's "nearly impossible" (or so they say.) After reviewing Valerie's nutrition and exercise regimen, how did she gain all that mass by only eating 1000-1500kcal/day? I know that her exercise program is very intense and that she's lifting pretty heavy, but how is this possible? Did she already have most of those muscles underneath and dieted down to reveal them?

Would appreciate some clarification!!

Thanks!

I was wondering the same question her cals look pretty low, I'm asuming that she was on a muscle gaining program first and once she gained all the mass she wanted she began a cutting diet. I also wanted to know what her cal intake is on the diet plan JB gave her such as low carb days and the high carb days

She didn't gain mass while eating 1000-1500kcal per day. You have to remember, that's what she ate leading up to a contest.

"Off-season" she eats more. That's when she builds her muscle. Pre-contest is a time to shed all the fat.

One of the most common questions we get from Precision Nutrition readers is whether we can help them personally. The answer is usually no, and has been for some time. And the reason is simply that there are more people that need help than there are qualified coaches to help them.

But every now and again, we open up a few spots in our coaching programs, and we're now accepting people on the waiting list for our group coaching programs: Lean Eating for Men, and Lean Eating for Women.
